The robotic milker
Two webcams capture all the milking action, which is done by robotics. Our Vitala cows decide when they are ready and want to be milked - sort of like a self-service pumping station! This system is more in tune with their bodies' natural rhythm and eases their comfort and well being. Happier cows means, yummier milk.
Swinging cow brush
Cows naturally like to be brushed and groomed, it’s in their nature. That’s why you’ll see them regularly scratching up against whatever they can find. Respecting this natural behaviour is essential for happier, high performing cows. At the Bakerview EcoDairy, we use a cow brush to improve animal welfare. The automated cow brush improves the cows’ blood circulation while keeping them clean, busy and calm.
A cow brush contributes to the herd’s overall well being:
- It’s installed in a free area and there is no need to force the cows to groom
- Grooming doesn’t get boring so the usage is constant
- Cows like to groom sensitive areas too
- The ranking of the herd doesn’t have an influence on the amount of individual grooming a cow will receive
- The cows are calmer and more emotionally balanced
- The cow brush is available for use 24/7
Feeding lane
At the Bakerview EcoDairy every cow has her own feeding stall. That way she can leisurely eat in her own space and can’t be pushed around by a boss cow. These dividers also reduce the competition for feed, so our cows are more relaxed and are likely to eat more, which means they’ll produce more milk.
The feed lane is elevated so that the automatic alley scraper will not hit the cows’ feet as it cleans the walking lane. And there’s rubber mat flooring to provide soft cushion comfort. We like to think of it as a 5 - star moo...tel experience.
Free stalls (cow beds)
Individual sleep stalls are designed for ultimate cow comfort. Vitala cows have the freedom to lie on their sides, rest their heads and legs, and sleep or stand without pain or stress. Our unique “PastureMat” flooring provides a firm but soft mattresses. And they are eco-friendly – there are eight recycled tires in each mat!
The stall pipe fabrication is also designed for cow comfort and accommdates their natural movement. Waste falls into the alley behind, so that the stall is kept clean and fresh.
